On Wednesday 1st January 1863 Robert Spratt was sued by Sarah Ann
Wing for six weeks of unpaid wages, amounting to 8s 6d. She had
commenced employment at the Portland Arms on 10th October 1862 for
the yearly wage of £3 10s and had worked to the 29th November, but
then had to stay at home, at the suggestion of Mrs. Spratt, owing to
a "bad leg". On 2nd December, Wing said she could not continue and
sought payment for the previous six weeks. Mrs Spratt refused to pay
since "she had not worked a quarter" and had not given one month's
notice. Mrs. Spratt suggested her leg could be rested at the Arms.
His Honour said that a month's notice was indispensible in a year's
contract, but an Act of God had interfered and the girl could not
continue, she had to rest her leg. Immediate settlement, with costs,
was ordered.
Area known as Upper Canada in 1875.
