| HENRY JOLLEY |
1841 |
|
|
|
The 1st entry on the Bawdeswell census of 1841 is that of William Elvin,
miller.
The 4th house entered is
that of Henry Jolley - Publican - age 35
Plus Mary, his wife, age 25
and daughters
Harriet ( 11 )
Emma ( 9 )
(?) Georgeanna ( 6 )
( ? ) Anna ( 4 )
Also in the house were:-
( ? ) Beth Longate ( 15 )
( ? ) Robert Richardson ( 20 )
( ? ) Charlotte Jolley ( 20 )
( ? ) William Jolley ( 25 )
Very faint pencil? entries open to correction marked ( ? )
The Bawdeswell windmill is shown
on early maps ( 1797 & 1826 ) as being located
on the road to Billingford, just beyond the position of the present
school and probably covered by the Norwich - Fakenham bypass.
This would place a public house somewhere in that
immediate area.
The name of the house has not yet been discovered.
It also seems to have been a substantial property
judging by the number of inhabitants.

NOTE :
In
1854 the school was said to be held in building erected in 1781 as the Workhouse
for up to 100 paupers and according to directories, used as such to at least
1845. In 1836 it had less than 20 inmates.
It is possible that Mr Jolly and family may have been inmates. From the assumed
route of the enumerator it would be on Mill Road with few other buildings in the
vicinity. One problem with this is that the building currently known as
the Old Workhouse is at the other end of the village.
