A mystery.
Known to be the premises of the premises of Walkers grocery from 1911.
Severely damaged by fire in 1919 the building was rebuilt in Art Deco
style.
Norman Peake, the owner of the Scientific Anglian bookshop from 1967 ( for
some 35 years ),
claimed to have seen evidence, in the form of
an early and rare street directory, that the premises were once known as the DOG.
The cellar at one time had access directly from the street and it is said that the ramp
was ideal for lowering barrels.
Furthermore it was said that when the house first became a bookshop there were brick stillages in the cellar.
These were removed at some time before 1980.
The cellar apparently contained three 14/15thC rectangular clay ovens.
( For producing drainage pipes? - Pipeburners row is nearby )
No other evidence yet found of the property ever being licensed as a
Public House.
