Admiral Vernon took the port
of Porto Bello ( Portobello ) from the Spanish in 1739.
He is credited with the introduction in 1740, of watered down rum rations to his crew.
Vernon apparently had the nickname of `Old Grog' and so the reduced rum ration took on the
name of Grog. |
