      	September 1864 -
      
     William Brewer was charged with detaining a black retriever, the 
	property of watchmaker Mr. Greenhow. Brewer said the dog was brought in as a 
	stray and he had advertised the fact. He was prepared to give up the dog in 
	return of expenses, since he had maintained the dog for some time. Greenhow 
	had declined to pay him, The case was dismissed.
