Given in directories from 1900 and in the licence registers as the HOWARD DISTILLERY.

Found as the VINE 1863 to 1896 and 1922 & 1925

At the licence transfer hearing Friday 18th May 1906 it was the opinion of one of the magistrates that the agreements between Brewers and their Tenants were unfair and indeed unjust to the Public. A man in a tied house could not supply the public so well as one who was perfectly free. Scores of licensed victuallers had said that they would rather pay a high rent for a free house rather than a lower rent at a tied house. The outgoing licensee, Mr. Banham said he had been (previously) at a free house and could not always get what he wanted.

Licence removed to the ROYAL ALFRED, Marine Parade, 14.04.1939.
