John Filby Ward was required to attend the Court at East Dereham on 19th January 1860 for his First Examination of Debts.
At that hearing Mr. Ward was described as an insolvent, formerly a mail contractor and publican. Messrs. Strangleman & Dyball opposed the examination on the grounds that goods had been obtained knowing that there were no means to pay for them. The insolvent ultimately passed the examination.
On 21st February 1860 a Final Order on the Matter of the Petition would be made. (Mr. Ward then described as Publican and Mail Contractor; before that, Dealer in Bread Flour, and Offals, and Schoolmaster and Postmaster.)

~

John Ward is given as a grocer, draper, ironmonger and postmaster in 1863, 1864, 1865, 1868, 1869 and 1872. No mention of beer.

Location as Weasenham St Peter in 1877

At the Norfolk Quarter Sessions on Tuesday 21st March 1865 the Bill against John Filby Ward, schoolteacher, for stealing two bushels of cut hay and straw at Rockland All Saints on 4th January was ignored by the Grand Jury.
Same J. F. Ward as the ex-publican?
