Shopkeeper & beer retailer only found 1863 - 1869. Robert Wright (age 40) and wife Rachel are thought to have been at the GIBRALTAR in 1851 but another Robert Wright (age 44) with wife Rebecca, is given as a grocer. 20th July 1868 - Beerseller Robert Wright was accused of selling beer without a licence. On 21st May 1868 he had been observed hawking from parish to parish, selling beer in the fields. Liable to a fine of £20, the Bench recommended that, with a caution, the penalty be mitigated to £5, since this was his first offence. 26th June 1869 - Beer-house keeper Robert Wright charged of hawking beer and selling at West Barsham on 15th April. Mr. Wright would blow a whistle when approaching the neighbourhood of his customers, who in turn would be supplied from a bottle of beer at his cart, each paying for what they drank. "Witnesses on both sides showed a most lamentable lack of education, two of whom could not give the name of the present month." The Bench imposed a fine of £10. |
