August 1996
August 1996

Operated as a shop by Mrs Dix since about 1888. She had been deserted by her husband in 1896."He was lazy and she would not support him."

Licensed from 22nd August 1898 when the Beerhouse licence of the BIRD IN HAND, King Street, Norwich, was transferred to these premises and a 6 day licence approved.
53 persons had signed a memorial in favour of the house. The vicar, the Rev. W. Molville Pigot opposed the application.
Licence confirmed 11th October 1898.

Address as No. 2 Leopold Road to at least 1939.

Full licence issued October 1922 upon removal of licence (and NAME, according to S&P records) from the BEEHIVE, St. Martin at Palace Plain, Norwich.

Norfolk & Norwich CAMRA Pub of the Year 2015.

In 1961 the BYSTANDERS FILM CLUB commenced a survey of Norwich public houses.
Unfortunately, by 1968 the challenge remained unfinished and Watney Mann had taken over the local breweries.... Toilet facilities (Conveniences) were rated on cleanliness and general standard.
This house was rated as follows:-

S&P No Draught Cider
Darts Conveniences 4  (5 being the best)
Parking
Like the Bedford being in a dodgy area, brand new cycle-lamp stolen on first visit.
Door difficult to find.
Very smart and comfortable Lounge, pneumatic seats in Bar.
Shove ha'penny, darts, pin-table and "Ming" vases in Bar.
No real parking facilities but given the benefit of doubt.
Beehive in Lounge floor.

The "White" beer guide of 1977 records:-

A Courage house.

Directors Bitter on handpump.

Good plain city local.
CAMRA meetings held Monday nights.

The Norwich Pub Survey of 1986, compiled by the Norwich Society, in association with Norwich City Council, assessed the house:-

Approx date of building Listed Quality Pre-war fittings surviving
External Internal
1890's No 4 6 Yes
Essentially a building of the late 1880's/1890's with period pictures < features?> which include first floor casement windows and dentilled cornice but much later alteration to ground floor c1900/1920's plus single storeyed <sic> 1920's addition.
cast iron demi column on corner of building.
Public bar - 1920's, fireplace with mantle-shelf; wooden fireplace; panelled walls.
Beehive motif etched panel near front door.
Matchboard dado and integral benches, (Late C19).
Probably bar fitted out in 1920's.
Melamine topped corner bar which connects to lounge bar.
Lincrusta ceiling, mixture of settles, leatherette covered benches.
Separate small `off sales' bar and front lobby.
Lounge bar - recently redecorated c1984/1985 in modern 1930's Art Deco style.
Well co-ordinated colour scheme. Good interior design.
It is less usual to find a pub which still keeps a lounge and public bar in favour of the prevalent open plan system and even less usual to find a separate `off sales' department.
