Original station opened c1844.

A new licence granted to Mr. Howlett on Tuesday 10th September 1850.
Of 18 applications for new licenses, this was one of only three that were successful.

Robert Louth, proprietor of the RAMPANT HORSE, announced 29th August 1857 that he had also taken the NEW REFRESHMENT ROOMS. The facilities were said to be `removed lower down the Platform for the convenience of passengers, where every article shall be of first-rate quality'.

The Great Eastern Railway Company applied to the Annual General Licensing Meeting, August 1885, for provisional removal of full licence to new premises, forming part of the new railway station under construction. Application granted.
Order declared final 23.03.1886.

On Thursday 9th March 1905, it was said that the refreshment room was merely an auxiliary business and in no way into competition with neighbouring public houses.
In consequence, under the note to first schedule of the 1904 Licensing Act, it was requested that only one-third of the compensation charge be applied to the business.
The Bench granted the application.
