28th December 1867 - "A First Class Hotel erected through the liberal and enterprising spirit of Mr. T. W. Merrison, of Worthing Mills, a long felt want in the neighbourhood. Recently opened by Mr. Robert Buckingham, formerly in the service of Captain Bulwer, of Quebec Hall, East Dereham. On the Friday 20th December several hundred gathered at the house, so many that a temporary building had to be erected outside..........."
