On Thursday 7th July 1814, to celebrate the Return of Peace, the morning was ushered in with a merry peal and firing of guns.
After Divine Service a grand procession took place, with effigies of John Bull and Bonaparte, which were afterwards placed on top of the shambles.
An excellent dinner of plum pudding and beef was provided in the Market-place at 2:00pm for 1800 poor inhabitants.
At 5:00pm sports were commenced at Neatherd Moor where upwards of 6000 spectators assembled.
The evening concluded with a bonfire and a grand display of fireworks in the Market-place.
